When we think of sexism, it can be tempting to call it a thing of the past – a nasty, embarrassing cultural oversight found in s advertising, or even in our favourite Disney cartoons. The expectation that a woman should always have a smile on her face is problematic. It perpetuates the idea that all that matters is how a woman looks. It also ignores the fact that women are human beings with a wide range of emotions. This expectation that women should only show positive emotions is backed up by research, which indicates that women are often punished for expressing anger, while men are rewarded for the same behaviour. If you ever find yourself tempted to remind a woman to smile, just remember that she might have a lot to be upset about.

After six years of the security, support, and occasional suffocation that comes with a long-term monogamous relationship, I recently became single for the first time as an adult out of college. I knew dating again would be a strange and possibly emotionally difficult experience after so long with one person. We had sex, texted, and hung out without counting the hours between messages or playing hard to get.
The second time, however, I was not so lucky. The radio silence post-coitus seemed strangely cold. The shift in his behavior was particularly striking because it runs so counter to most conventional adult behavior.

Children who hold seemingly positive, “benevolent” views about women are also likely to hold negative ones, a team of psychology researchers has found. Their results also show differences between boys and girls in how these views change over time: “hostile” sexist perceptions decline for both boys and girls as they get older, but “benevolent” sexist ones diminish only for girls. But other times, these behaviors — even though they may seem inoffensive — might signal that children view women in a negative light, as weak, incompetent, and unable to survive or thrive without a man’s help.
Many understand the term “sexism” to refer to overtly negative attitudes toward women, Cimpian and Hammond observe. These could include perceptions that women are weak, incompetent, or overly emotional. However, they note, there’s another aspect of sexism that is often overlooked — what researchers, notably Susan Fiske and Peter Glick, call “benevolent sexism. Previous studies have shown that adults who hold sexist views that are hostile also possess ones that are benevolent.
But less clear is whether or not children also simultaneously hold these perceptions — and whether or not these views change through childhood. To address this, the researchers looked at the attitudes of more than children, aged 5 to 11, in two locations: New York City and Urbana-Champaign, Ill. They were asked if a series of statements were “right” or “wrong. In analyzing children’s agreement and disagreement with these statements, the researchers found that children gave statistically distinct patterns of responses to the statements expressing hostile and benevolent views about women.
Importantly, however, they also found an association between these types of views, meaning that if a child agreed with a hostile statement, then he or she was also likely to agree with a benevolent one. In addition, the findings showed that children’s hostile sexism decreased with age for both boys and girls. However, benevolent sexism decreased with age only for girls — and not for boys.

The members post uncensored screenshots of the messages they receive from dating sites. It is a way for women to call out the men who send derogatory messages. The messages were often racist and sexist making assumptions about foreigners and disabled women.

Deva Mahal shut down a sexist date on Netflix’s Dating Around season two. The show is known for casting a diverse group of contestants in terms of race, gender, and sexuality. The show features a single contestant who goes on five dates with five different people in the hopes to find love. While the show portrays all types of singles, season 2 is focused on pairing singles in New Orleans, which has added a welcomed flare to this set of dates.
She is also open to dating both men and women, and is paired with both genders in this episode. This includes True, who is the source of some more-than-uncomfortable moments during his date with Deva. Deva is calm throughout each of her dates , showing off her mature and grounded personality, which was needed mostly during her awkward one-on -one with True, a Los Angeles native who repeatedly makes insensitive and sexist remarks from the moment they sit down at the bar.
True doesn’t get why he is offensive, but nonetheless the date continues to the dinner portion where things only get more uncomfortable when Deva refuses to share her food. This sparks True to state he exclusively dates bisexual women , saying that he only wants to date someone who equally appreciates women like he does. Things take a turn for the worse when Deva asks him if the women in his life are also allowed to date other men. By Paris Vasser Jun 13, Share Share Tweet Email 0.

Being a tech Luddite , I never dreamed of using a dating app. However, when other options were exhausted, I found myself selecting photos and summarizing myself in a user profile. I chose Bumble because it was rumoured to have more professional men than other apps and I was intrigued by its signature design where women ask men out. I had no intention of writing about my socio-sexual experiences, but as soon as I started my Bumble journey the words began to flow.
Writing helped me cope with the bizarre things I encountered, and my anthropological insights told me that my observations were unique as well as timely. But what is Bumble all about? What does it reveal about feminism and gender in contemporary dating culture? It was very serendipitous.
